Hublot’s in-house mastermind Mathias Buttet made it a personal project to recreate the mechanism of the Antikythera in the size of a timepiece. He did so and Hublot produced just four of them – never to be officially sold aside from at one or two special auctions.
Hublot has been leading the industry most notably in the case material with unique alloys under the "Fusion" concept, but with joining of Mr. Mathias Buttet and his team and equipment for the inside of the watch, it just started showing its new direction with last years novelties, MP-1 and MP-2.

Mathias Buttet, head of the High Complications department at Hublot, is said to have been inspired by the bullet shape during a trip to Mexico, where he saw locals wearing 9 mm bullets as necklaces, as they are considered lucky charms. In 2011, Hublot presented the Tribute to Antikythera, created by their designer Mathias Buttet and his research and development team. It was intended as a reconstruction of the Antikythera mechanism in the form of a watch, and they made just four pieces, reflecting the state of research on the original Antikythera due to Hublot’s commitment .Hublot, one of BNB’s biggest clients and located in Nyon, only five minutes from Duillier, hired Mathias Buttet and thirty of his associates. Along with them came the Antikythera project. “I told Jean-Claude Biver,” Buttet adds, “that he must not be a grave robber.To support and mark this occasion, Mathias Buttet, Hublot R&D Director attended the dives, and presented the OCEANOGRAPHIC EXO4000 dive watch, also designed for extremes, and which pays tribute to the scientists involved in this incredible adventure. The Antikythera mechanism is one of the most mysterious objects in the history of civilisation.
